Be informed about obesity.
(extracted from www.chiropractors.asn.au)
Obesity rates have more than
doubled in last 20 years and 25%
of Australian children are obese
(www.asso.org.au). In 1995 the
number of pre-obese and obese
Australians was 52% of all men
and 37% of all women This number
increased to 62% of men and 45%
of women in 2004/5 (National
health survey, 2004 -2005. ABS:
Jamison, 2007) . Being
overweight or obese can
substantially increase your risk
of developing health problems
such as high blood pressure and
high blood cholesterol which can
lead to heart disease, stroke,
type 2 diabetes and joint and
back problems. These are the
leading causes of death and
disability in this country. In
1993 obesity cost Australians
$841 million - 12% of the health
budget (www.ntrnrc.gov.au/publications/synopses/_files/n33.pdf).
